Enrichment

At Centre Academy London, we have 5 key Teaching and Learning Principles. “Maximizing opportunities to learn’ through active learning and enrichment is central to our pedagogical approach to education.

Whilst we ensure consistent routines and a calm conducive environment, we do not want silent classrooms. Learning is active, student focused and interactive. Additionally, we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Enrichment activities bring subjects to life and foster personal growth. They support students in developing vital social, emotional and practical skills, helping them become more confident and curious learners.

Below is an overview of how CAL has ‘maximized opportunities to learn’ across the curriculum:

English

  • A cross curricular trip to Kew Gardens during Spring term
  • World Book Day celebrations with themed activities and costume participation
  • A pen pal exchange with students at our sister school: Centre Academy East Anglia
  • Participation in both poetry and short story competitions

Mathematics

  • Two visits to the Bank of England
  • Our annual STEAM Day featured hands-on maths-based activities.
  • Half-termly maths challenges set by the student Maths Prefect

Science

  • A trip to the Science Museum
  • A Science competition on the theme of water conservation
  • The Annual Science Fair, judged by an external expert, celebrating experiential learning.
  • Incorporation hands on experiments in lessons

Art

  • Entries have been submitted to both the ISA Art Competition and the Royal Academy of Arts competition.
  • The annual Arts Fair
  • The creation of the “Keep it Real” turtle which is on display as you enter our school

Film Studies & Performing Arts

  • Students visited the Pulse Digital Arts Exhibition
  • A KS3 trip to watch ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom as part of the Into Film Festival
  • A rare opportunity trip to Borehamwood Film Studios
  • The annual showcase of student performances and film projects for parents and the wider school community

ICT

  • Students have entered games they developed through coding initiatives.
  • Plans are in place for a trip to the National Army Museum to participate in a coding workshop

Humanities & Citizenship

  • A cross curricular visit to the British Library, exploring the Silk Road
  • A workshop on trench warfare at the National Army Museum
  • Local trips to the Wandsworth Library as well as orienteering activities on the Wandsworth Common and local history walks
  • Students will submit an entry to the Historical Association Prize for the Best Secondary School History Magazine
  • In Citizenship learners presented active citizenship projects during assembly and shared resources with the CAL parent and guardian community.

PE

  • Lunchtime games and competitions
  • The development of student leadership in sports

Specialist Team

  • The recognition of Children’s Mental Health week which saw students take part in assemblies, tailored PSHE lessons and a non school uniform day
  • An annual Wellbeing Day
  • A virtual workshop for KS4 students on relationships and masculinity
  • A visit from PC Williams and PC Clark

And finally, …

  • The much-anticipated annual East Soar Residential Trip encourages independence and team-building whilst exploring the scenic Devon coastline.

In short, at CAL active learning and enrichment is not an add-on—it’s embedded in our philosophy and practice.
